Socialism: A Very Short Introduction by Michael Newman is part of A Very Short Introduction series from Oxford University Press and is written in a textbook style. Separated into five chapters including the introduction and at one hundred forty four pages it is an easy read. Newman uses a minimal definition of socialism as a guideline for the book, stating, “The most fundamental characteristic of socialism is its commitment to the creation of an egalitarian society”. Setting a foundation for further chapters, he covers the history of the socialist movement talking about its various forms and major contributors to it developments. He makes comparisons between social democracy in Sweden and Communism in Cuba systematically covering the highs and lows of both governments. Each chapter builds upon the one before it, giving the reader a firm understanding of socialism.
