I just reread Upton Sinclair's 'The Jungle.' Though a fictional one-dimensional story purposefully constructed to lead the reader to where the author was taking them, the events described did happen to more than a few in the time and place of the story's setting. The author does a good job of presenting what life can be like for many in a grossly exploitive economic environment without an adequate social safety net. And by adequate: I mean adequate. Not what we have now.

A must read for every person interested in a more humane society.
